Rogues Chapter #9 Hasting Market -Pâtisserie Luc
Hastings Market is beside the South Coast Boardwalk, a popular place to stroll
along the ocean. People
amble, jog, stop to stare, or pelt along for their
daily exercise. Tropical plants, sea grapes, spider lilies,
yuka, sea cabbage, ferns, and shoreline ground cover create a
mystical natural
experience. In the center of the boardwalk is the bandstand. From
there, and on either side, one can see the bright pink Santa Neta
apartments, the ArtSplash Learning Center, a patio cafe, and the
Hastings market.
The market is a United Nation of
vendors. Many are Bajans, there are also
British, Guyanese, Italian, and French, artisans residing in Barbados. About a dozen artisans attend
the market with their crafts, art, and farm goods all grown or made
by hand.
In This Chapter of Rogues in Paradise French Chef Luc, shares his story of coming to
Barbados and setting up his business. He
creates some of the best french bread you will find
anywhere- My favourite is his sourdough. There are
also many other
farmers and crafts folks who enhance the day with their
own experiences. In fact, the market is a United Nations of
vendors. There are Bajans, British, French, Guyanese,
and Italian vendors now living and working in Barbados.
The
chapter tells the story of how Billy
the Irish man launched the marketplace and
witnessed it develop past
his expectations. Billy's motto is "Try it - its
the only way you will know if it is a good idea and never fear failure.
It is the way you learn."
