Memories of Barbados Adventures.
Not often does one come across actual adventurers who have a fearless spirit of adventure and an endearing sense of fun. This was Rex Wotton, a sailor, climber, scuba diver, and a great sport. With his parents, Les and Muriel, Rex Wotton managed the West Coast Watersports shop at Coral Reef hotel, just up the beach from Settlers Beach. The center took hotel guest diving and on daytime and sunset cruises around the coast. He was a professional seafarer trained by the Royal Merchant Navy in navigation, and marine work. Rex was just one of the most unforgettable Rogues in Paradise. His sense of joy and sharp wit enveloped every situation. Sailing to St. Vincent with a friend at age 11 shows his sense of adventure. He encouraged all to share his pranks and daredevil acts, making it seem safe, easy, and a joy. Often reckless, he took extreme but calculated risks.
One time, when a person splashed a cocktail at him, he instantly threw the ice water of a wine bucket over their head. When mocked by a comic who made an insulting comment about him, Rex repaid the put-down by stealing away the comics' legendary green top hat. Right past security and the concierge, he strolled with a defiant air and his roguish smiling giggle.
That was his manner, he would not allow much pass him and typically returned insult with a twofold measure of the same, but it was masked in charisma and style. He almost never showed anger, but it was at hand when needed.
